POLICE CHIEF: Position posted 1/22/2026To perform responsible law enforcement and investigation work; to maintain law and order throughout the Village of Bellaire; to investigate complaints and provide assistance as required; to perform necessary record keeping work and assist in servicing civil papers; to assist in office functions at the Village; and to perform related work as required. This Position is a 40 hour per week job with the possibility of overtime. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPOSIBILITIES: An employee in this classification performs general law enforcement duties in the Police Department. This employee enforces traffic laws, issues tickets, appears in court, responds to vehicle accidents, apprehends persons who violate Village ordinances or State statutes, responds to complaints from citizens, assists persons seeking aid, and performs related duties as assigned. • Reasonable knowledge of the roads and principal locations in the Village of Bellaire. • Ability to prepare work schedule for employees.• Reasonable knowledge of driving rules and regulations and of pertinent state and local laws and ordinances. • Ability to patrol the Village in a patrol car, on foot, bicycle or other means of conveyance.• Work hand in hand with event organizers & MDOT permitting process. • Ability to prepare accurate written records and reports. • Ability to act quickly in emergencies.• Skill in the use of firearms. • Current basic first aid, AED and CPR Certification.• Organize department annual training for Officers & Agency. • Have a good working knowledge of computer software. • Ability to deal with the general public firmly, courteously and tactfully. • Good physical condition, which shall mean the ability to apprehend, subdue and control individuals who require physical intervention.AN EMPLOYEE IN THIS CLASS, UPON APPOINTMENT, MUST HAVE THE FOLLOWING TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE: The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill and/or ability required to perform the essential functions of the position. Applicants may be required to take written and/or other examinations. An employee in this classification, upon appointment, must have the following training and experience.• Graduation from an accredited high school. • Must possess MCOLES Certification or one year graduate provisional certification from an approved MCOLES Academy or College or be certifiable. o A person who is "certifiable" is one who has attended and successfully passed an MCOLES recognized police academy and is now able to seek employment as a licensed law enforcement officer.o A person who is "certified" is an individual who has already become employed as a licensed law enforcement officer. Once an individual becomes employed as a law enforcement officer, with full authority to enforce the criminal laws of the state of Michigan, they have then completed the licensure process.Reasonable work experience which would indicate dependability, maturity and ability to exercise good judgment. Must have a valid driver’s license and be at least 21 years of age. QUALIFICATIONSAt the time of application, the candidate must:1. Be a citizen of the United States.2. Be at least 21 years of age.3. Possess a High School Diploma.4. Have been awarded and provide proof of an Associate Degree in Law Enforcement or Police Administration or a Bachelor Degree in any non-Criminal Justice discipline from an accredited college or university; Or possess two (2) years of paid full-time qualified work experience; Or possess an equivalent combination of college education and full-time paid qualified work experience. Be one of the following and provide proof: o A Certified Michigan Police Officer; ORo Certifiable as a Police Officer in the State of Michigan, subject to verification or re-verification by a Michigan Commission on Law Enforcement Standards (MCOLES) approved training academy; ORo Be currently enrolled in an MCOLES approved training academy and certifiable by date of hire.6. Possess normal hearing, normal color vision, and normal visual functions and acuity in accordance with the Civil Service Commission approved visual acuity standard as attached. 7. Be free from any physical defects, chronic diseases, organic diseases, organic or functional conditions, or mental and emotional instabilities which may tend to impair the efficient performance of duties or which might endanger the lives of others or the individual employee;8. Provide proof of a passing MCOLES physical fitness certificate obtained within the preceding twelve (12) months of the applicant’s interview date; and meet all other physical requirements as determined by the Civil Service Commission and a physician appointed by the Village. ALL CANDIDATES MUST COMPLY. THERE ARE NO EXCEPTIONS;9. Possess and maintain a valid motor vehicle operator’s or chauffeur’s license and have an acceptable driving record.DESCRIPTION OF WORKAn employee in this classification performs general law enforcement duties in the Police Division of the Department of Public Safety. This employee enforces traffic laws, issues tickets, appears in court, responds to vehicle accidents, apprehends persons who violate Village ordinances or State statutes, responds to complaints from citizens, assists persons seeking aid, and performs related duties as assigned. NOTE: Candidates are required to submit original degrees/transcripts and MCOLES certification in consideration for the Interview Panel. NOTE: At the time of appointment, applicants are required to pass a pre-employment medical examination including drug testing conducted by a physician authorized by the Village of Bellaire.PROBATIONARY PERIOD: Appointees must satisfactorily complete a 60 day probationary period before the appointment will be considered regular.STARTING WAGE: $25.29 per hour.CLOSING FOR APPLICATIONS: February 26, 2026
Downtown Development Authority Seat Vacancy (posted 1-12-2026) The Village of Bellaire is seeking interested individuals to fill a vacant position on the Downtown Development Authority. Terms are 4 years. Meetings are held the last Wednesday of the month at 9:00 AM at the Village Hall, 202 N Bridge Street.
